This map clearly depicts the landmarks from the Bocca Tigris to Canton that had already become familiar to Western sailors. Additionally, set-in diagrams illustrate the city of Canton, the French Folly Fort and the destruction of the Keep on 3 April 1847.
The French Folly Fort was guarded by thirty soldiers and twenty cannon and was situated on the eastern passage to Canton.
