Engagement of HMS Magicienne with the Russian Horse Artillery at Ravensari, in Finland on the 7th of June 1855
This coloured lithograph was produced by Day & Son on June 16th, 1856. It depicts a naval combat scene from the Crimean War of 1853-1856. The depiction shows HMS ‘Magicienne’, a steam paddle-frigate launched in 1849, exchanging fire with horse artillery of the Imperial Russian Army on the Finnish coast. Finland was under Russian rule at this time and the location of this scene is Ravensari. The ‘Magicienne’ can be clearly seen in the left of the image, gun smoke billowing from her port side. A small village can be seen on the coast to the right of the ship, with the skeletons of what look to be unfinished boats. The Russian troops, along with their horses, wagons and artillery can also be seen, along with their fire – the splashes of their shot can be seen around the steam frigate. In the right foreground, floating wreckage can be seen, along with flights of gulls. The sea is calm, with a sky of patchy cloud.
