Bombardment of Sweaborg Augt 9th & 10th 1855
A view of the bombardment of Sveaborg. ‘Prompt’ is mortar vessel no. 23, shown bow on in the foreground, centre right. There are no identifying numbers for the other vessels in this image. Coloured lithograph.
The mortar vessels lost their names and were identified by numbers of the major vessels at Sveaborg. George Osbon, of the NMM, was able to list the names of the vessels with their numbers when he examined a contemporary watercolour drawing of the attack on Sveaborg, which gave both the names and the numbers and which was sent to the Museum for inspection.
