His Royal Highness Edward Augustus Duke of York and Albany. Rear Admiral of the Blue

A full-length portrait of Edward Augustus, Duke of York and Albany (1739–1767) in commander’s undress uniform, 1748–1767, with the ribbon, star and garter of the Order of the Garter, leaning against a table. His hat and two books are on top of the table and a globe, a telescope and a pair of compasses are underneath it. There are two classical columns in the background with a ship firing a salute on the left and a swag of drapery on the right. Lettered beneath the image with the title, ‘His Royal Highness Edward Augustus Duke of York and Albany; Rear Admiral of the Blue Squadron, Earl of Ulster, & Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line, ‘J. H. Schaak pinxt. / T. Burford fecit. / London Printed for John Ryall at Hogarth’s Head, Fleet Street.’ This print was engraved by Thomas Burford after a painting by Schaak. Edward Augustus, Duke of York and Albany, was the younger brother of George III. Entering the navy in 1758, he cultivated a public reputation as a glamorous and valiant officer, although his service record was somewhat equivocal: he was involved in a failed assault on Saint-Malo in June 1758 and a successful raid on Cherbourg in August 1758. His seagoing career ened after his brother ascended to the throne in 1760. (Upated June 2019.)
