Samuel Hood, 1st Viscount, 1724-1816 (before title)
Portrait.
Scratched letter state. A three-quarter-length portrait in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1767–83, and white wig. Hood holds a telescope in his right hand and leans against a rock. In the right hand background, there is a naval engagement, probably representing the ‘Barfleur’, 98 guns, Hood’s flagship as rear-admiral of the blue, taking the French ‘Ville de Paris’, 104 guns, at the Battles of the Saints in April 1782. This portrait was engraved in mezzotint by Henry Kingsbury after an original painting by James Northcote (current location unknown). Northcote’s painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1784. (Updated April 2019.)
