The Right Honble Earl of St Vincent, K.B. First Lord of the Admiralty
A half-length portrait to left of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent (1752–1820) in admiral’s undress uniform, 1795–1812, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath. He is seated on an upholstered chair in front of swags of drapery with rolled charts on a table beside him and a view of a naval engagement in the background. Lettered beneath the image the title, ‘The Right Honble. Earl of St Vincent, K.B. First Lord of the Admiralty and one of His Majesty’s most Honble Privy Council &c. &c.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘J. Keenan Pinxt. / W. Barnard Sculpt. / London Publish’d August 10, 1801 by W. Barnard No. 1 Fitzroy Street, Fitzroy Square.’ This portrait was engraved by William Barnard after an oil painting by John Keenan (currently unlocated). Keenan’s painting was exhibited at the annual exhibition of the Royal Academy between April and June 1801 and Barnard’s print was published by the engraver a few months later on 10 August 1801. St Vincent became First Lord of the Admiralty and joined the Privy Council in February 1801 and these appointments are referenced in the print’s inscription. (Updated June 2019.)
