Charles Saunders Esq Vice Adml of the Blue Squadron of His Majesty's Fleet, & Lieutt General of His Majesty's Marine Forces (before Letters)
State before letters. A three-quarter-length portrait of Charles Saunders (c. 1713–1775) in flag officer’s undress uniform, 1748–1767, with wig. Saunders holds the hilt of his sword in his left hand and grips the crown of an anchor with his right. This portrait was engraved in mezzotint by James Macardell after an original painting by Joshua Reynolds (see BHC3012). Reynolds’s painting was produced in spring 1760. It was later updated to include the ribbon of the Order of the Bath after Saunders was installed as a Knight of the Bath in absentia on 26 May 1761. This print does not include the ribbon and therefore must have been created before the painting was altered. (Updated April 2019).
