Charles I and a model of Sovereign of the Seas
Etching of an imagined scene showing King Charles I seated with a model of the 'Sovereign of the Seas' and a globe and books behind. This etching mirrors a portrait of Charles from the collection of Earl of Denbigh in the NMM Collection (BHC2607), which like this etching, shows Charles wearing a dark cloak with the Star of the Garter embroidered on the sleeve, and a pearl earing. it is possible that Spence worked from, or was influenced by, that oil painting. The model depicted is undoubtedly the model of the 'Sovereign of the Seas' (SLR0356) commissioned by the Surveyor of the Navy, Sir Robert Seppings in 1827 for the ship model gallery at Somerset House. The channels, gunports, decorations, and even the three pillars supporting the model on the baseboard all match this model. Spence would have no doubt seen it when it was kept at South Kensington Museum, before being transferred to the NMM Collection in 1934.
