French galley at Marseilles
Ange-Joseph Antoine Roux was the second artist in a dynasty of Marseille ship portrait painters, a tradition inaugurated by his father, Joseph Roux (1752-93). The family hydrographic business included marine pictures as an adjunct, and the combined output of the various members spanned a century, with watercolours being produced for French, British and many American clients. The watercolour is signed and dated 1816.
