Paddle steamer, a brig, off a colonial outpost
This watercolour by an unidentified artist shows the paddle steamer brig Peru (or Perue as perhaps on her company flag) in port broadside view, under steam only. She is flying a Union Jack at her bow and an ensign at her stern as well as various pennants at her mastheads. Several figures can be seen on the deck. A similar paddle steamer, perhaps the Chile, is just ahead, on the far left of the picture. Both vessels are heading into a harbour, depicted in the background, and supposed to be a colonial outpost. A sailing vessel with lower courses hoisted is shown on the far right horizon.
