Sulphur Island [two views on one sheet]

Signed by the artist and dated, l.r. below image 'W: Ellis fect. 1779.' The inscriptions appear to be later as on others of the group. That above the upper image reads, 'Sulpher Isld / SULPHER-ISLAND / So[uth] Side 2 miles'; that below the lower image reads, 'The upper view as seen Monday 15 Nov 1779, at 9 A.M. / Southside, dist 2 Miles [with roman 'II' above] / 'The under view the W.S.W. side distant 2 miles /[next line] See Ellis's Voyages. Vol 2. page 323'. These are views taken on Cook's third voyage (1776-80), presumably from 'Discovery' by the ship's artistic surgeon's mate and among ten by him in the collection (PAH0144-PAH0153). This drawing is not listed in Joppien and Smith's 'The Art of Captain Cook's Voyages' (vol. III [1988]): reasons for the omission are not clear. For notes on Ellis see PAH0144. [PvdM 10/18]
