'View of the Rock & the adjacent country at the entrance of the Bay of Awatchska on Kamtschatka'
Inscribed in lower margin, as title, and in the top of the drawing 'Monday a.m. at 8', both apparently by the artist though the drawing is not signed. The upper line has had '26th April 1779' added in pencil which, if by Ellis and accurate, suggests it was made on the first visit of Cook's ships to Avacha Bay, Kamchatka, although Joppien and Smith's catalogue of the art of Cook's voyages (vol. III, p. 555, [1988]) dates arrival to the 29th. That work, however, does not include this drawing for reasons which are not clear. The view was taken on Cook's third voyage (1776-80), presumably from 'Discovery' by the ship's artistic surgeon's mate and is one of ten by him in the collection (PAH0144-PAH0153). For notes on Ellis see PAH0144. [PvdM 10/18]
