'Continuation of the coast, from Providence Harbour, in the Island Unalashka....'

Signed by the artist and dated,l.r. 'W. Ellis fect 1778'. The lower margin bears an inscription apparently in the same later hand as on other drawings of the group: 'Continuation of the coast, from Providence Harbour, in the Island Unalashka, on the N.W. coast of America Saturday 27 June 1778 N side'. The authority for this is uncertain and the drawing, as with some others in the group, was not included in vol. III of Joppien and Smith's 1988 survey of the art of Cook's voyages, though why is unclear. Joppien and Smith state that Cook, on his third voyage (1776-80), was on the Alaska Peninsula from 16 to 22 June 1778 and then made a first visit to Unalaska from 28 June to 2 July (no drawings are known from the second visit of 3-26 October). If the dating is correct, the view was presumably taken from 'Discovery' on the approach to the island, by the ship's artistic surgeon's mate, and is one of ten by him in the collection (PAH0144-PAH0153). For notes on Ellis see PAH0144. [PvdM 11/18]
