William Blessley (1790-1876)
Oil painting, portrait of William Blessley (1790-1876). This sitter was born in Bristol and became a master shipwright at Pembroke, Plymouth and Portsmouth Dockyards. It is likely he was also at Chatham since listed as living there with his wife, Mary Anne (see BHC2561) in the 1851 census. He is shown half-length, facing right in a frock coat. The picture was presented, with another of later date of his wife, by a Mrs Gibbs in 1949. Mrs Blessley died in 1859 and in the 1871 census he was retired and lodging at 23 King Street, Portsea. He died at Portsea on 15 December 1876, aged 86.
