Alexander Transport No.453 of London Mr Thomas Hart Master

Watercolour by an unknown artist which depicts a London Transport ship at anchor. Under the image, it is inscribed: "Alexander Transport No.453 of London Mr Thomas Hart Master". In the Lloyds Register for 1813, there are two London transport vessels called 'Alexander', which are listed as being under the command of "Hart", one of 364 tons, owned by Kenion & Co, and the other of 301 tons. It is thought that the image depicts the larger vessel, as the 10 gun ports suggest the more substantial vessel. The 364-ton 'Alexander' is also listed as commanded by "T. Hart", which would appear to correspond more accurately with the inscription below the image.

A letter dated 7 February 1989 suggests that this particular image was often used to illustrate articles on convict ships. However, there is no evidence that this vessel ever transported convicts.

Medium includes pen and brown ink.
