Wreck of the Princess Augusta of London.... at Southwold on the morning of the 28th of Octr 1838 on her voyage from St Petersburgh laden with hemp and linseed

This lithograph portrays the merchant ship ‘Princess Augusta’ wrecked off the coast of Southwold after her journey from St Petersburg carrying hemp and linseed. Whilst observers spectate in the foreground, many figures are depicted carrying the ship’s cargo to land and on to horse-drawn carriages. The ship is tethered to two windlasses on the beach, her bow sticking upwards whilst her stern sinks into the water. Many boats assist with the move near the stern and many sailing vessels can be seen in the background, seemingly sailing against rather strong winds.
