Clipper ship Newcastle 1275 Tons

A starboard broadside view of the British clipper ‘Newcastle’ with a smaller, starboard quarter view of the same ship in the right distance. The mainmast is flying the house flag of Green’s Backwall Line. Coloured lithograph.
She was employed in the 1860s transporting labourers ('coolies') from Calcutta to Georgetown, to provide labour for the West Indian plantations. She also transported troops to Calcutta, but after the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 she was transferred to the Melbourne passenger trade (Basil Lubbock, ‘The Balckwall Frigates, pp.239-240).
