Admiral of the Fleet George Byng, 1663-1733, 1st Viscount Torrington

A full-length portrait of Admiral George Byng, Viscount Torrington, facing to the right and towards the viewer. He is wearing viscount's robes and a shoulder-length grey full-bottomed wig. He also wears the chain of the Order of the Bath. His right hand rests on a column to the left and in the background to the right is a scene from the Battle of Cape Passaro, in which he won a notable victory over a Spanish fleet off that south-eastern point of Sicily in 1718. Since the sitter died in 1733, this portrait was either started in the year he died, or, more likely, was painted posthumously.
