His Majesty's Ship Daedalus passing some ice islands.... on the Eastern Steep edge of the Great Bank of Newfoundland
The 32-gun fifth rate frigate 'Daedalus' is shown passing some ice islands on the eastern steep edge of the great bank of Newfoundland on June 21st 1794.
Inscribed: "His Majesty's Ship Daedalus, passing some ice islands. In a very thick Fog when objects were not visible fifty yards distant in North Latitude 45o 18' on the Eastern Steep edge of the Great Bank of Newfoundland at a quarter before Nine o'clock in the Morning on the 21st of June 1794. The Daudalus Frigate of 32 Guns. Capt. Sir Charles Henry Knowles Bart. hauled up and passed close to the Stern of a Ship that was stranded upon an Island of Ice, & sailed to Windward of it throu' a great deal of drift Ice and to Leward of another Island of Ice. The Ceres Frigate of 32 Guns Capt. Thomas Hamilton passed in the same Track & saw the wreck a quarter of an hour after the 'Daedalus'. The course was East, The Wind S.W. The Sea was very high, as it blew hard the Night preceding from South."
