The Blowing up of the Boyne, a 98 Gun Ship, at Spithead, May 1st 1795

Hand-coloured print of the 'Boyne' engulfed in flames, as the crew jump into the sea, some of them being helped into boats or hanging onto floating ship fragments. The 98-gun 'Boyne' (launched in 1790) was in action in the West Indies in 1794 as flagship of Vice-Admiral Sir John Jervis. It was lost to accidental fire while lying with the rest of the Channel fleet off Portsmouth on 1 May 1795. For further information see PAH0753. A long verse in English about the incident is engraved below the image here, which is an imagined evocation of the incident by a publisher exploiting the popular market. Whoever the artist was thay had little knowledge of ships and none of Portsmouth, since the landscape to the left is wholly invented. [PvdM 8/23]
