H.M. Brig Serpent, (Commander R.L. Warren) dismasted, Whilst lying at Anchor at Spithead by a Tremendous Hurricane on Tuesday the 29th of Novr 1836
Hand-coloured. For information on Sargeant, the Portsmouth-based artist, see BHC3193. He may have been appointed 'Marine Painter to H.R.H. Duchess of Kent' (Queen Victoria's mother) as the inscription at lower left states, in connection with her visits with the then Princess Victoria to stay at Norris Castle, East Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, in 1831 and 1833. Given the date of the incident shown, the print is likely to have been published - by Miller of Portsmouth - early in 1837 (when Victoria acceded to the throne in June) rather than in 1836.
