H.M.S. Queen arriving at Spithead
A finely detailed tinted lithograph of the Royal Navy ship Queen, in head-on bow view, with a following wind, bearing down impressively on the viewer and filling the picture. All her sails are hoisted, except for her foremast upper topsail which is looped. Her figurehead is visible either side of the bowsprit, framed by her port and starboard anchors and their chains. On the right of the picture an un-named naval vessel is at anchor, her crew on the yards furling her sails, and a loaded cutter leaves her starboard side. On the left of the picture, there is a fore and aft rigged boat under full sail and a paddle steam ship in the distance, against a low, rolling coastline. The picture is framed by a twisted and knotted rope border, linked to a name plate at the bottom engraved with the artist’s name, Thomas G. Dutton.
