H.M.S. Leander, 50 guns, appointed to convey the Royal Commissioners to the Exhibition at New York
This tinted lithograph is a portrait of the 4th rate, 50-gun Leander (1848), which was appointed to carry the Royal Commissioners to the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations, held in New York in 1853. Her foresail, mainsail and spanker are furled and her outer jib is lowered. She is surrounded by smaller vessels fore and aft, which include a tiny sailing boat in the left foreground, carrying a man in a top hat and a woman in a bonnet. A coast is visible in the background, left, and seagulls glide above the choppy waves, right.
