La Gloire

Plate No.5. A scene of three French naval vessels at anchor, flying French flags at their sterns, with small sailing, steam-powered and rowing craft in the foreground and background. A fortress is visible on the coastline on the far right of the image.
The central image is a port side view of La Gloire, an ironclad ship with three masts. Another ironclad is visible in the background, with sails hoisted. On the right of the image is a stern view of a three-masted, square-rigged sailing ship, also flying the French flag. The name Daunawerth is visible across her stern and is hand-written below the image.
As La Gloire was launched in November 1859 she preceded the British iron warship Warrior which was launched the following year. La Gloire can be considered the first sea-going ironclad battleship in the world.
