Sir John Coke (1563-1644)
A half-length portrait to the right showing Coke with a moustace and goatee beard in a black doublet with white lace cuffs, a wide white ruff, the robes of a secretary of state and bacl cap with white lace trim. He holds a scroll in his right hand and clasps his robe with his left. Coke's coat of arms and motto are in the top left and the top right carries an inscription: 'Sir John Coke Secretary / of State to / King Charles the First / 1638'.
John Coke became treasuer to the Navy in 1591 and was a naval commissioner from 1621 to 1636. He became secretary of state in 1623 until his dismissal in 1639.
