Official boat badge of HMS Amphion

The starboard side boat badge of HMS 'Amphion' 1944. The official design approved in January 1933. It depicts a dragon's head issuing from a naval crown. This is derived from the crest of Admiral Thomas Masterman Hardy who commanded 'Amphion' in 1803. The badge is pentagonal, with a gold rope twist border representing a cruiser. It is made of cast brass; is not drilled for attachment to the vessel and is unpainted. 'AMPHION' is impressed on the reverse. HMS 'Amphion' was a modified Leander-class light cruiser built at Portsmouth Naval Dockyard and launched in 1934. She was sold to the Royal Australian Navy in 1939 and renamed HMAS 'Perth'. She was deployed to the Mediterranean in 1940 and was present at the Battle of Cape Matapan in 1941. She returned to Australia for refitting and survived the Battle of Java Sea. She was torpedoed and sunk on 28 February 1942 in action in Sunda Strait.
