A study of a fishing buss viewed from the starboard quarter. The fore and main yards lowered and the small square mizzen loosed. On the tafferel there is an allegorical figure of Fortune and below it the date [?] ‘1648’. The vessel is possibly called the ‘Fortuin’.

The drawing has been made in light pencil with wash added only in the water. The difficult curve of the wales to the sternpost has been accurately drawn, but the rounding below the wales has not been expressed and the sweep of the wales forward is faulty. The date on the stern is probably the date of building.

This drawing is tentatively attributed to the Younger and approximately dated by the subject and style. Other drawings on the same paper may be as late as 1665, but if one decides the work is by the Younger, then by the style an earlier date is to be preferred. The drawing would have to be placed quite late for it to be in the manner of the Elder.
