A crowded harbour showing a States yacht, hoeker and pont
In the right foreground, a hoeker is in port-bow view close inshore. She has her mainsail and topsail set. In the centre, a States yacht is in starboard-quarter view with a barge pulling away. On the left is the flat stern of a pont.
This drawing is a sketch for a painting. The general composition bears some relation to ‘Ships in the roads’, circa 1658 (Mauritshuis, The Hague). The main difference is that in the drawing there is land shown in the right foreground with men hauling a boat ashore. It is very approximately dated by the subject and the signature.
