The stern of the 'Walcheren'

The drawing was probably used in connection with a grisaille or with a painting of the action at Bergen, 2[OS]/ 12 August 1665. Inscribed in brown ink in the Younger’s hand ‘Het schip Walgere, waer d kommanduer bitter mede van… [The ship ‘Walcheren’ with which Commodore Bitter…]’. Bitter commanded the ‘Walcheren’ at Bergen.

A detailed study of the stern and starboard quarter-gallery of the ‘Walcheren’, an East Indiaman, built 1661. On the tafferel, is the arms of Zeeland on a crowned shield supported by two figures holding staves and with a foot advanced. Above is written the date ‘Amno 1661’. On the rail is a small arms of Zeeland supported by tritons and dolphins. Two shields are on the counter, on the starboard side are the arms of Zeeland and on the port side the arms of Walcheren.

This is probably an offset, not in reverse, from the same original as PAH3878. It is completely worked up in pencil.
