Portrait of the 'Oranje'?

A starboard-quarter portrait of the ‘Oranje’?, an East Indiaman of about 70 guns. The ‘Oranje’, built 1665, was an East Indiaman that was burnt that year at the battle of Lowestoft. This is probably a drawing of a ship that replaced her, but no record of such a ship has been traced.

On the tafferel is the arms of Zeeland on a crowned shield surmounting crossed anchors, supported by two lions. At the top of the tafferel is the date ‘1666’. On the rail above is a coat of arms supported by dolphins. Inscribed in brown ink ‘oranije van seeland’; and on the back in pencil ‘genaemt oranije gemackt tot flesinge…’[cut]/ ‘got wiles beware die de met het schip oranije va…’ [cut]. [Called the ‘Oranje’, built at Flushing. The Lord preserve those who sail in the ship ‘Oranje.’]

The pencil is rapid and not very accurate, strengthened with a little pen. It is approximately dated by the subject and the watermark.
