Portrait of the 'Leiderdorp'
A starboard-quarter view portrait of the ‘Leiderdorp’, 26 guns, built ?1667, with no mentioned afterwards. The fore topsail is hoisted, with other sails furled or clewed.
On the tafferel is a view of a village with a church on either side of a street. On the rail above is the arms of Amsterdam between two dolphins. It is inscribed ‘leider dorp’, copied by a later hand. It is also inscribed ‘Leiderdorp’ on the back.
One of two offsets, both rubbed on the back, worked up with a little pencil on the hulls. Not in reverse, this drawing has been used as the original for the hull of PAH1794, which has had masts and sails added to it in rapid pencil, and an offset may then have been taken from it. It is approximately dated by the subject, but the watermark suggests and earlier date.
