A Dutch squadron forming line of battle, May 1672?

In the centre, a lee-quarter view of a ship under topsails with the wind on the port quarter (?’...gerk…en’). In the left background the commander-in-chief’s ship (? De Ruyter in the ‘Zeven Proviencien’) is hove-to, flying the jack at the mizzen peak as the signal for the order of battle. On the right, the rear-admiral of the centre is repeating the signal.

Sharp pencil-work has been added by a later hand.

This is one of twelve drawings at the NMM which by the inscriptions on them and by the paper they are on appear to belong to a series done before the Battle of Solebay, 28 May 1672. The only numbers traced in the NMM collection are 59 and 60. Other drawings made before the battle are in the British Museum and the Ashmolean Museum.
