River pageant on the Y at Amsterdam in honour of the Prince of Orange, 5/15 June 1660
A crowded scene of English and Dutch ships, yachts and boats at anchor off Amsterdam. In the centre middle distance, a States yacht flying English Union flags at the masthead, peak and ensign staff. This is probably the yacht offered to Charles II by the town of Amsterdam and named by him the ‘Mary’; it left Holland in August 1660. On the left, are a kaag and smalschip with a spritsail yacht beyond. There are also a number of boeier and other yachts. In the background are two large ships with English Union flags at the main, and several Dutch ships. In the distance are the towers of the Wester Kerk on the right and of the Oude Kerk on the left.
There are two similar drawing in the Musée des Beaux Arts, Paris. The date of the drawing is puzzling: the style is not unlike PAF6584, which must be of the English period. Also in favour of a date later than 1660 are the correction in the date of the incident on one of the Paris drawings from 1651 to 1660, the signature in brown ink which might be circa 1675, and the English appearance of the yacht in the centre, her standing gaff rig and her length forward. The pendants under the flags, however, are a Dutch practice and one would have expected van de Velde to have shown the English practice, unless his knowledge was so precise that he knew that the ships flying English flags were Dutch ships, as they probably were, since there is no record of large English ships being at Amsterdam in 1660.
