Portrait of the 'Speedwell'

A portrait from before the port beam of the ‘Speedwell’, 28-gun fifth-rate, built 1656 as the ‘Cheriton’, renamed 1660, wrecked 1678. There does not seem to be any decoration round the upper deck ports. There is a quarter-badge high up on the quarter.

This drawing is made with freedom and accuracy but without the addition of any wash. The ship is shown high out of the water and without guns. It is possible that the drawing was made about the same time while the ship was laid up in ordinary.
