Portrait of the 'Saudadoes'?
Viewed from slightly before the port beam, a portrait of what may be the ‘Saudadoes’, built as a yacht of six guns in 1670, rebuilt as a sixth-rate in 1673, and captured in 1696. Also called the ‘Sodalis’. The positions of the masts are shown and the lower part of the main staysail is furled. Her decks are crowded with people and there is a barge alongside. There are nine wreathed ports on a broadside and a small light below the second port from the stern.
There is muddled drawing in the positions of the aftermost ports, which may account for the differences from the clear drawing of the ‘Saudadoes’ in the Maritiem Museum Prins Henrik, Rotterdam.
This is a faint offset, not rubbed on the back, from a drawing formerly in the Newman Collection, no 13 (illustrated) in American Art Association sale, New York, 4 December 1930. If the ship is correctly identified, she is shown after her rebuilding.
