Portrait of the 'James Galley'?
A port-bow view portrait of what may be the ‘James Galley’, 30-gun fourth and later fifth-rate, built 1676, wrecked 1694. This ship is not the ‘Charles Galley’ but might be the ‘Mary Galley’, built 1687. Inscribed near the quarter gallery, but crossed out ‘?ors…en’.
There is another drawing of the ‘James Galley’, starboard-bow view, dated 1676 (PAG6237). Also drawings in the Victoria and Albert Museum (4656) and in the Boymans Museum, Rotterdam, starboard-broadside view (33-1072).
Offset rubbed on the back, lightly worked up with wash.
