The stern of the 'Hampton Court'
This work is a ship portrait, illustrating the stern and starboard-quarter gallery of the ‘Hampton Court.’ This is one of two drawings (along with PAH1881) in rapid pencil and wash, much in the manner of Van de Velde the Younger but lacking his accuracy in the rendering of the rake of the stern. It has been approximately dated by both subject and style.
There is a comparable drawing in the Boymans Museum, Rotterdam, which depicts the ‘Hampton Court’ from abaft the port beam (MB1866/ T359).
