Stern of an English first or second rate
This is a study of a stern only. It shows only a part of the port quarter-gallery. There is a semi-circular panel above two rows of stern windows, which has on it two figures reclining either side of a plain crowned shield. There are no royal arms shown.
This is one of two drawings (along with PAH1880) in rapid pencil and wash, much in the manner of Van de Velde the Younger but lacking his accuracy in the rendering of the rake of the stern. It has been approximately dated by both subject and style.
