Portrait of the 'Royal Escape'

This is a depiction of a vessel viewed from before the starboard beam. There are five square decorated ports on the broadside.

This is a rapid but nonetheless accurate drawing and it has been approximately dated by its watermark. There is another similar drawing of this vessel in the British Museum, which was probably a preparatory work for finished oil paintings of the same subject. These pictures are “The ‘Royal Escape’ in a Breeze” by Van de Velde the Younger, dated before 1685 and currently in the Royal Collection (RCIN 405211) and “The 'Royal Escape' Close-Hauled in a Breeze” (BHC3600), in the NMM.
