Portrait of the 'Vrijheid'
This is a ship portrait, where the vessel is viewed from just before the starboard beam.
This work is one of two drawings (with PAH3928), both probably based on offsets, but not in reverse, worked up with light pencil and wash and strengthened by rapid but accurate penwork. Based on their style and watermarks, the drawings are believed to belong to the period 1685-86 when the Van de Veldes revisited Holland. The work has been rubbed on the back, where an offset has possibly been worked up.
