Study of a galjoot at anchor
This drawing shows a small sailing boat, known as a galjoot, depicted from just behind the port beam. There is some dispute about the identification of the vessel: usually a galjoot is rigged with a small mizzen, and her quarters are usually fuller than the ones seen here. The narrowness of the boat’s leeboards are, however, typical of a galjoot.
Based on the style and subject, the drawing is believed to belong to the period when the artist visited Holland in 1685-86. However, the form of the signature suggests that it may date from an earlier period.
