An English ship drying sails
This is one of two drawings (along with PAH1903) both very broad in style, executed in rapid pencil. They have been approximately dated to 1700 by the style.
Here, van de Velde has depicted a freely-executed drawing of a ship in starboard view. She has her courses clewed up and her fore topsail furled. Her main and mizzen topsails are hosted half up and hauled out to a bowline.
