Captain Nicholas Haddock (c. 1685-1746)
A three-quarter-length, full-face portrait to the right showing Haddock in a buff-coloured coat and a full-bottomed wig, with a ship and a yacht in the right background. There is a later inscription: ‘Nicholas Haddock / Admiral of the Blue, / (Son of Admiral Sir Richard / Haddock, Comptroller of / the Navy) of Wrotham, / Kent. M.P. for Rochester, / 1734 & 1741. B.1686–D.1746’.
Nicholas Haddock distinguished himself at an early age at the Battle of Vigo Bay, 12 October 1702. He was promoted captain on 6 April 1707. In 1718, while in command of the ‘Grafton’, 70 guns, he played a leading role in Byng’s victory at Cape Passaro. He was commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean during the War of Jenkins’s Ear.
