Rear-Admiral James Hemmington (d.1757)

A half-length portrait within a painted oval, slightly to the right, showing Hemmington wearing a white stock and swathed in red drapery; a ship can be seen through a curtain in the right background.
James Hemmington served in a series of ships during the War of the Spanish Succession. On 12 November 1708 he was promoted captain, commanding the 32-gun ‘Experiment’ until June the following year. In 1711 he was captain of the ‘Bristol’. Little is known of his career after this point until he returned to service in the ‘Dorestshire’ in 1734 and the ‘Princess Amelia’ in 1738 on the eve of the War of the Austrian Succession (the War of Jenkins’s Ear). He was promoted rear-admiral on the retired list on 3 June 1747. He died on Boxing Day 1757.
