Viscount Samuel Hood (1724-1816)
A full-length portrait to the left, showing Hood in his flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1767–83 pattern, wearing a white toupee and holding a telescope in his left hand. This is an enlarged copy of the Gainsborough in the Ironmongers’ Hall, which was a present from Hood on being admitted to the Company. It was presented to Greenwich Hospital by the Ironmongers’ Company in 1825. John Wood (1801-70) was a respectable London painter and RA exhibitor of historical and biblical subjects, and of portraits, though the quality of his work declined with his health in later life. (Note that it is not included under 'style of' Gainsborough in the NMM 'Concise Catalogue' (1988) as most 'after' pictures are.)
