Rear-Admiral Sir Edward Inglefield (1861-1945)

A three-quarter-length portrait, very slightly to the right, showing Inglefield in his rear-admiral's full dress uniform, 1904-19, holding his hat is his right hand and his sword in his left. He wears the star and neck decoration of the KBE, George V's coronation medal, the Nile medal and Khedive Star and the order of Medjidie (4th class). It is signed and dated: 'Frank E. Beresford, 1924'.
Edward Fitzmaurice Inglefield was the youngest son of the Arctic explorer Admiral Sir Edward Augustus Inglefield (1820–94). He was promoted midshipman on 16 March 1876 and entered service in the Emerald-class corvette HMS ‘Tourmaline’ in 1879. He was promoted lieutenant on 3 July 1883. He was stationed to Malta in 1889 and used the time before the commission of HMS ‘Melita’ in 1892 to develop the Inglefield clip, a device for quickly attaching signal flags. The clip was patented in 1894 and became standard issue in Royal Navy the following year.
Inglefield was promoted commander on 30 June 1895 and ended is naval career in command of HMS ‘Antrim’, part of the Channel Fleet. He was placed on the retired list on 30 June 1907 and attained the rank of rear-admiral on 9 March 1911. Upon leaving the Navy, he became secretary of Lloyd’s of London (1906–21) and was also chairman of the Rio de Janeiro Lighterage Company Ltd. Inglefield was appointed CBE (military division) on 7 January 1918 and elevated to Knight Commander on 1 January 1919.
