George Johnson, Master (ca.1805-1856)
A half-length portrait, slightly to the right, showing Johnson in his master’s full dress uniform of 1846.
George Johnson was a master in the Navy from 1830. He served in the survey vessel ‘Active’ on the coast of Africa until 1832 when he transferred to the ‘Beacon’, which was engaged in surveying the Mediterranean. Between 1836 and 1842 he was in the East Indies in the 26-gun ‘Conway’ in the East Indies; after a short spell of unemployment, he joined the 120-gun ‘Howe’. In 1853, still in the Mediterranean, he took command of the store-ship ‘Apollo’ and served in the Black Sea during the Crimean War.
