Captain Robert Larkan (ca.1756-1841)
A half-length portrait to the right showing Larkan in his captain’s full dress uniform (over three years) of 1830–33. Robert Larkan was promoted lieutenant on 25 February 1779. He was in the ‘Latona’, 38 guns, during Lord Howe’s relief of Gibraltar in 1782. He was first lieutenant in the 74-gun ‘Leviathan’ at the Battle of the Glorious First of June 1794 and was promoted commander on 6 July that year. Promoted captain on 16 September 1796, he commanded the 20-gun ‘Camilla’. He saw no further sea service after the Peace of Amiens. In 1818 he was made a Captain of Greenwich Hospital. There are also some miscelleous late papers of Robert Larkan in the collection (BGY/L/4) while MNT007 is a miniature of his brother, Commander John Larkan, and MNT006 of John's daughter, who latterly lived close to her uncle at Greenwich, where both died.
