Lawrence was secretary to Admiral John Byng during his Mediterranean campaign and he appeared as a witness for the defence at Byng's court martial following his inconclusive action that resulted in the loss of Minorca in 1756. He was on the quarterdeck of the ‘Monarch’, 74 guns, when Byng was executed there by firing squad on 14 March 1757. The admiral gave his watch to Lawrence as a remembrance. He subsequently held shore posts in various dockyards, spending the last 30 years of his life living and working in Deal, Kent, where the Navy had a small yard that specialized in building ships' boats.
