Part of Greenwich Hospital from the Ravensbourne

A view from Deptford, over the Ravensbourne (Deptford Creek) looking north-east towards Greenwich. While previously thought to show the original Wren west wing (replaced to John Yenn's desgn in 1812-15) of the King Charles Court of Greenwich Hospital, with the domes of the King William and Queen Anne Courts almost in line, it may in fact show a picturesque impression rather than accurate record of the bulk of Greenwich seen from the south-west, just inland of Deptford Bridge. Part of the bridge arch appears in the middle ground, low cottages on the west side beyond. It also shows the market-garden nature of the Deptford area before it was fully built over, with workers picking vegetables in the field and cows grazing. It may be a plate from 'Britannia Delineata...' (1822) to which Harding was one of several contributors, but of which only the first part was ever published, covering views of notable buildings and picturesque scenery in Kent.
